How does Booking.com handle cancellations or changes to your reservation?

My husband and I are planning a short trip next summer. However, since it would be during the holiday season, I would like to book our accommodation a few weeks ahead. It helps to have one less thing to think about, and it would allow us to focus on packing and preparing.
Anyway, I'd like to know what happens in case something comes up and we can't make it. Can we change our reservation on Booking.com, and how far in advance must this be? Would they charge us a cancellation fee in case there are no available dates that suit us?

If you want to change or cancel a booking, the cancellation fee or refund will depend on the property's cancellation policy. Some bookings can't be canceled for free, while others can only be canceled for free before a deadline. You can find the property's cancellation policy on your booking confirmation. Changes are usually allowed before your check-in date.
