How can I avoid crowds when visiting popular destinations in France?

Crowds make me anxious and I feel like visiting places with a lot of people around would take away from my travel experience, but I still want to see some of France's touristy spots. I know a lot of people want to visit too and I don't expect to have the whole place to myself, but I have to ask: How can a tourist avoid crowds in France?

The easiest way to avoid crowds is to visit France during the shoulder and off seasons. The high season is in June to August and December to January so you should avoid those months. Otherwise, try to go to tourist spots early in the morning and during the week to get there first.
