Are there any cultural customs I should know when traveling Europe?

Asked 2 years ago

Greetings, my friend and I and getting ready to go on a trip around Europe, and I've been thinking about whether there are some specific European customs I should be aware of. I don't want to accidentally insult someone or get into any sort of trouble, so is anyone familiar with the etiquette in different countries in Europe? Appreciate all answers!

Cultural norms vary across Europe, and you will always run into niche cultural behaviors that strike you as interesting or different. That said, there are some things you can keep in mind which will give you a good starting point.

  • Tipping: Ask a local what the norm is if you are unsure as it varies between countries
  • Dress appropriately: Respect the dress code of the locals, as well as historical and religious sites
  • Personal space: Ensure you maintain a respectful noise level, as well as become accustomed to local personal boundaries (for example, how the French greet those close to them with a kiss on the cheek)
  • Learn a few phrases: Learning a few words or sentences in the local language will take you a long way in understanding their culture
